A well-known dress worn by Princess Diana is up for sale.

Even though it isn't as well-known as her head-turning "revenge dress," a piece of silk velvet in the color aubergine is still one of Princess Diana's most well-known gowns. The late royal wore it for an official portrait in 1991 and an intimate spread in Vanity Fair in 1997, just before she died.

The dress will be auctioned off for the first time in more than 25 years at a Sotheby's sale in New York later this month, where it is expected to fetch up to $120,000.

The aubergine velvet ballgown worn by Princess Diana is going up for sale for the first time in 25 years.

The strapless dress, created by Victor Edelstein, has a tulip-shaped skirt and sculptural sweetheart neckline. In 1997, it was one of Diana's donated 79 dresses that Christie's charity auctioned off for $24,150. The Royal Marsden Hospital, where she was president for eight years, was one of the AIDS and cancer organizations that received funds from the sales, which totaled $3.25 million.

Mario Testino took the pictures for the Vanity Fair story, which focused on the auction. The magazine called her decision to sell the dresses "a powerful symbol of her changing life" after her high-profile divorce from Prince Charles, saying that she was "jettisoning a life that never was."

However, when asked about her decision to sell the garments, the Princess of Wales was more reserved, stating only that it was "a wrench to let go of these beautiful dresses." She told the publication: However, the fact that others can now experience the same joy as I did while wearing them makes me very happy.

The deep purple gown was from Edelstein's Autumn 1989 collection, but Sotheby's says he made custom outfits for the Princess for more than a decade. It was depicted in a painting by Douglas Hardinge Anderson in 1991 and in a 1998 Franklin Mint doll. Edelstein was also the designer of Diana's midnight blue "Travolta Dress," the long velvet dress she danced in with the actor at the White House. It sold for £264,000 ($347,000) to a charity in 2019 after it failed to sell at auction.
A ticket to former President John F. Kennedy's 1962 birthday party, where Marilyn Monroe serenaded him, and LeBron James's Miami Heat jersey from the 2013 NBA Finals are among the other notable items from fashion and entertainment that will be up for auction at Sotheby's on January 27. This Edelstein gown is one of the items that will be included in "The One."
